Issue:

After some time, AFP access to a certain shared folder on a QNAP device would fail.

Finder would be able to navigate to the QNAP via AFP, but when attempting to mount the share, it would attempt to connect for a minute or so, then fail with error message:

Connection failed

There was an error connecting to the server “[NAS IP]”. Check the server name or IP Address, and then try again.

AFP connections to other shares was fine,
SMB connection to the share in question was fine – Just could not access via AFP.

Resolution

Direction given by QNAP support:
– Update to firmware 3.8.3, the system was previosuly on firmware 3.8.2,
– Install FileZilla, Acess NAS via SFTP,
– Navigate to “/share/MD0_DATA/folder_name”,
– Delete folder “”.AppleDB” (The folder definetly starts with “.Apple”

Reconnect and it works fine.

Response was: “bug in 3.8.2 firmware, nas had changed folder metadata, so if you delete it, and mac will re-create correct metadata”
