ESXi 5 – Install additional network driver for Intel DH67BL Motherboard (Intel 82579V Gigabit Ethernet Controller)

Issue:

My current ESXi 5 rig is based on an Intel DH67BL Motherboard, which makes use of an Intel 82579V Gigabit Ethernet Controller. This unfortunetly (at time of writing) does not appear when installing ESXi 5.

Rather than having to purchase another NIC, the onboard Ethernet can be enabled by installing the needed drivers to the standard ESXi installer. Follow instructions here: http://www.ivobeerens.nl/2011/12/13/vmware-esxi-5-whitebox-nic-support/

    I decided to move to VMWare from Proxmox as I needed another server for my sip trunking VOIP business.

    I knew these board had to work as OVH use it in a few of their dedicated servers.

    Anyway, your solution fitted the bill perfectly. I’ve ordered a motherboard USB to standard USB 6 inch cable and I’m installing ESXi to a USB stick.

    One thing for anyone to perhaps note with this board is that part way through the install I was unable to press the enter key using my USB keyboard. I had my USB keyboard plugged in to one of the blue USB ports and these seems to get diabled in someway part way through the install.

    Just plug the keyboard into one of the other USB ports and you are good to go.
